ALABAMA BONSAI SOCIETY

GROWING TREES IN BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA SINCE 1974

Our meeting last night at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens was a lot of fun. After a little business information was taken care of, John Walker of Walking Tree Bonsai gave us a presentation on tropical bonsai, something that many of our members and visitors really enjoyed. In addition to describing several techniques for maintaining tropical bonsai, John discussed care for them during different seasons of the year. Though we’re in Zone 8A, we still have to be careful in the winter with our more sensitive trees.

Here’s a teaser: a quick look at the variety of tropical bonsai John brought to use as examples.

Following John’s presentation, we enjoyed seeing some trees that members brought for a private July show. Interestingly enough, every one was a narrow-leaf ficus.

The final tree we saw was probably everyone’s favorite, because the owner had a photograph of what it had looked like a few years ago.
